THE YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW bio

The Subtle and the Absurd

The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living
patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the
enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is
both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a
sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead
the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey
through part of history that may or may not have
existed – followed by an ambitious return to the
emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary
world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers,
dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry -
all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs
cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual
and sonic voodoo.

Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild
West in the late 1800's and slammed into the
underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard
Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient
theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture.

The Before Now and How Did

There is some speculation as to the origin of all
this. Not for the want of mystery but for the
difficulty in translating an experience that was
navigated by the overly-romantic and sleep deprived.
Shows came and went leaving very little time to fully
comprehend what was going on. Some say the
carnival-inspired performance art of the Yard Dogs
Road Show began as a three piece jug band performing
in road houses and dance halls and at informal
gatherings, including Oregon’s modern day acid tests
with Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Some say they
traveled in a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 and the evolution
of their show revealed itself in the flames of a
campfire on Dog Creek Road: dancing dolls with feather
fans, an hombre in silver sunglasses eating fire, a
dreamy guitar boy with golden locks, a bearded swami
capable of conjuring the supernatural . Others say
this story is complete hogwash and it was actually the
brainchild of a unemployed “cowboy” and his faithful
muse – transient artists with an incredible talent for
brainstorming impossible ideas while under the
influence of poppy tea and wishful thinking. By
chance these conversations were overheard by an
ambitious young poet who decided to actualize them for
the sake of all impossible dreams everywhere. When the
three finally immerged from their stupor they realized
that they were in show business. An almost homeless
lifestyle sprinkled with moments of outstanding glory
and recognition. But mostly uncertain days. The only
thing they could rely on was the fact that there would
always be glitter under their fingernails and confetti
in their bed. Truly a life of horseshit and confetti.

Either way, that was eight years ago, and the unlikely
troupe of gypsies has been performing on stages ever
since.

The Bread and Butter

In an historical sense we are a family run show. We
endeavor to operate a values based entertainment
business that sustains itself on pure democracy and
creative collaboration. The Yard Dogs are a naturally
occurring phenomenon - favored by those seeking an
unsullied entertainment experience. We are continually
working towards a refinement of showmanship and
musicianship while simultaneously finding creative
ways to embrace our community and the forever present
unexpected.

The Untold and Who Knows

We have many plans that require many miles. Some say
the show will settle down, maybe in your town – in a
small theater or even under canvas - just long enough
to flatten the grass and feed the baby. Whatever the
future holds we want you to be there, dressed in your
finest masquerade. Now is the time to alter the
course of our journey and we hope that you will be
there to witness the charade.

THE INDIGO BELLY DANCE

Bellydance Superstars Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes and
Mardi Love bring you Vintage Cabaret with ragged edges
in a strange brew of Belly Dance, Ragtime,
Vaudevillian, Mid-Eastern and Gypsy music. Sometimes
enchanting, sometimes mischievous, often raucous, but
always delightful, these performers breathe new life
into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era.
March 22 - the Asheville Bellydance Technique Smackdown with Zi'ah Ali
Hey folks,
Join us for some SouthEastern Bellydance Community-building fun, with
the Bellydance Technique Smackdown
with Zi'ah Ali of Awalim Dance Company (Atlanta, GA)
Saturday, March 22
Asheville, NC

So you think you can bellydance?
Join Zi'ah Ali, Director of award-winning TribalCon and Awalim Dance Company, for an intense day in the studio. Workshoppers make a verbal agreement at the beginning of class and then work to make it reality -
Flawless isolations? Beautiful zils? Intricate footwork? Yes? Yes. YES!

Committed to perpetuating bellydance in its pure, expressive and artistic form, Zi'ah will have us quivering with enthusiasm and exertion.
A great resource to take your dance practice to the next level.

The workshop will be followed by a delightful evening of performance and world music at the BoBo Gallery in Ultra-Hip downtown Asheville. After the show, DJ Pop n Lock Aleikum (aka August of The Mezmer Society) will be spinning insane and festive tunes for the fan of Indonesian HipHop and Eastern European swing.

The Workshop is at the Movement & Learning Center
90 Biltmore Ave, Asheville NC 28801
Registration at 10:30am.
Classes are 11am-1pm & 2-4pm
$75
Bring finger cymbals, shoes, water, a notebook & layers. Kneepads & a yoga mat are optional.

the Hafla is 8-10pm, followed by the crazy World Music DJ.
$10 at the door
BoBo Gallery,
Lexington Avenue, Asheville, NC, 28801.
The BoBo has both a wine bar & wholesome food.

Register at www.barakamundi.com or Paypal onca@barakamundi.com.
Call 828 232 2980 with questions.

OH AND ----

On April 5, award-winning Zafira Dance Company will be teaching and performing over the hill in Knoxville. In the spirit of generating bellydance community, we have arranged a bulk rate. Folks pre-registering for both at once enjoy the amazing rate of $120.

Jim Boz is coming to Huntsville, AL!!!!!!! The Beledi Club of Huntsville will host the wonderful Boz July 18-20, 2008. All the details aren’t on the Beledi Club’s website yet, but here’s what we have so far:

•	Hafla Friday night either at the hotel of choice or The Studio … possibly wandering to my favorite local gay bar just to amuse Jim and show him off to my friends there.
•	Four hours of classes with Jim on Saturday that will be decided upon at the Club’s January meeting. Check out Beledi Club of Huntsville’s Tribe for a listing of what our options are. http://tribes.tribe.net/belediclub and to keep up to date on our progress with planning this event.
•	A few specially chosen vendors … we have invited Faye and Bipin (who just so happen to be friends of Jim’s), plus Linda (local Beledi Club Member) and Belilah (Beledi Club member) who will be selling Eye Kandy!
•	Show Saturday night at the American Legion which will be a benefit for the local ASPCA, a charity near and dear to the Bozman’s heart. There will be a cash bar and a simple menu available to order from (things like burgers, chicken fingers, fries, pizza, etc). We’re considering having a silent auction or something of the sort to help get money for the ASPCA. The Legion gives us this location for free since we do charity shows, so big kudos to them. Tickets to the show will be $10 each or included in your price if you pay for the workshop by the Early Bird deadline (June 1). Performers aren’t expected to pay for the show, but are asked to make a $5 charitable donation.
•	Three hours of classes on Sunday will be a bit more advanced than that offered on Saturday, but not beyond anyone who survives the previous 4 hours with Jim.
•	Prices are going to be great! The Early Bird Price offered is $125 if paid for by June first. This includes your ticket to the show and 7 hours of class with Jim. After June 1st, the price changes to $150. A single day of classes will be $75 if paid for before June 1st or $80 at the door.
•	We’re working on getting pricing for hotel rooms, but that’s still in the works …
•	Put this one on your calendar – you’ll kick yourself if you miss it!!!!!

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

The 8th (Friday night) will be our student recital, plus the teachers may dance a bit as well ... and you get to see IZZY! You recognize the name from Temptation Bellydance(I KNOW you do!) ... I drool over her, I will admit it. This chick is awesome! Saturday will be 4 hours of bellydance bootcamp (a break for lunch in the middle) for only $45 at the Early Bird price and $50 at the door. Sunday will be geared towards intermediate & advanced dancers for another 2 hours of class. The price for Sunday's class is $25 Early Bird and $30 at the door. Or get both classes for the Early Bird price of $65! ($75 for both at the door) Get your money in early, as The Studio isn't very big and we can't pack all of the Southeast in there. There won't be a performance or "official" hafla Saturday night, but we are planning a "guerilla hafla", so stay tuned for the details of what club/restaurant we intend on overrunning ... Check Izzy out at izzydancer.com ...

That Saturday will be partnering choreography and Sunday will be partnering with floorwork. Each day will offer 3 hours of classes starting at 11am with an hour for lunch starting at 12:30. Don't miss this one --- getting these chickies here from New Jersey is NOT an easy task! And while you're here you can attend the Third Annual Shahala's Toys for Tots Show which Kassar will be performing in. Come on and join us --- you could even be in the show and be able to claim that you danced on the same stage as Kassar! The price is only $75 for both days or $40 for one day as long as you pay before the day of the workshop. It will be $90 at the door for both days or $45 for one day.
IF you haven't had a chance to take a workshop with
*PETITE JAMILLA*
NOW is the time!
Touring full time since 2004 with BELLYDANCE SUPERSTARS leaves very little time for PETITE JAMILLA to teach workshops, so the rare opportunity of the workshops in NYC and BHAM is a treat indeed! A steller instructor, PETITE JAMILLA, will leave you with new knowledge of veil use, including using more then one veil. Don't miss your chance to study with PETITE JAMILLA this summer.

ABOUT PETITE JAMILLA:
Bellydance Superstars youngest member Petite Jamilla, as pictured on the cover of “Live at the Follies Bergere” DVD has been touring with the Bellydance Superstars since January of 2004. Performing the celestial and inspiring double veil as a featured part of the show, is just a fraction of what this talented dancer has to offer. Since she was 17, Petite Jamilla has been teaching workshops that range from Zill Techniques with Modern Incorporations, Choreographed Fusion Drum Solo’s, and Spinning Introductions with Double Veil “How To’s.” By the age of 20, she had produced 2 instructional DVD’s [Beginner’s Dance Movements, and Secrets of the Double Veil] available for purchase through www.bohemianmarket.com. Cross-Cultural Fusions are a passionate focus for this dancer as her Irish/Native American ethnicity became the incentive to further explore and push the boundaries of fusion in dance. With training in Bellydance (taught by her mother, Jamilla Rasa), Polynesian, Scottish Highland, Modern Irish, and Cape Breton Step Dancing her unique blend began an unclassifiable style. Dually equipped as a classically trained musician in Western style compositions and Scottish/Irish blends - it was, of all things, the Highland Bagpipes that showcased Petite Jamilla’s talent for the critically acclaimed Rod Stewart in February of 2000

Cheese) opens the door for registration, warming up, and friendly hellos around 9am. We will break at noon for lunch, then return at 1:30pm for the sword workshop. Workshop is $50 or $25 for one class at the door. Sword workshop doesn't have as many open slots as space is limited for use of sharp pointy things. You DON'T want to miss this! Zi'ah is spectacular! She was nominated in Zaghareet for best workshop/coordinator of 2006. She is also the teacher of Moria, one of the most luscious tribal chickies in Bellydance Super Stars. A hafla will follow at 7pm and last until Lisa and I decide we need to collapse. Hafla is open to all with either food donation or $5 studio donation per person taken at the door. BYOB, of course, and children are very welcome(and not charged donations for) as we will have quite a few lovely tribal babies to watch dance. Music will play throughout the night with a performance by Zi'ah and Rosario. If you have anything you'd like to dance to or would like to show a new choreography you are working on, you are more than welcome to share with us. Come enjoy a day with the Naughties!

Dandasha will be performing gratis at the Chattanooga Market this coming Sunday, June 4th. Having danced here twice in two years, I must say this is one of my favorite things. Dancing for fun, dancing outside, and dancing for the locals, givin' them a taste of something new and different in a market styled on freshness and artistry. And since this will be our last performance before August (and you never know what we're gonna tweak or altogether trash in our dances by then!), come support us with some warm, southern-flavored zaghareets!

If you don't frequent or haven't been to the market, you're missing out.

"When you visit the Chattanooga Market, you will find still-warm bread from local bakeries, just picked produce that is thousands of miles fresher than most store-bought stuff (and tax free!), live music, artists and artisans selling things that they've made in and around Chattanooga, live chef demonstrations from some of our finest restaurants, farm fresh free range eggs, meats and more just waiting to entice you. Get lost in a Sunday filled with things that are good for your heart and soul, and support the local economy."

This sunday is themed East Meets West. "East Meets West is a culture day that really kicks off the early summer with a bang. Representatives from the Indian, Pakistani, and Chinese cultures share their music, culture, dance, & foods this day at Market. "

Sacred Art of Belly Dance

Hey Dancing Dames,

I just wanted to get the word out. My friend and amazing belly dancer/teacher Titanya Dahlin is going to be giving a workshop at the Feathered Pipe Ranch in Montana later this spring. I've got a prior engagement so I won't be able to make it this year, BUMMER. Though I thought you might be interested or help get the word out to your community about the workshop. These ladies are incredible dancers and the workshop is super WOMAN-EMPOWERING. The Dahlin sisters utilizes Chinese five element theory, journaling, creative art, meditation and play to create an awesome if not transformative experience.

The dates: May-13 thru 19 2006, Cost is $1050 and I'm pretty sure that includes food and lodging. So it's a fantastic soul reviving week to get you jazzed about your life and power as a woman. I know you already know about that cause you are a powerful woman yourself, and it's always nice to take a break from "your life" and refresh.

Check out the website: http://www.featheredpipe.com/ to see what the location looks like. I went to the Baxter Bell workshop last year so I got to experience the vibe. Excellent! Montana is beautiful in Spring. The clear fresh mountain air, warm days, cool nights.

Nichole is the director of the Nashville based bellydance company Gypsyville and co-director of nationally recognized burlesque troupe Panty Raid! She has been performing with the sword for a decade and has perfected the delicate balance of sensuality and strength it takes to wield a scimitar. The class will include her unique style of sword dancing, which entails not only balancing it on the head but anywhere else you see fit. It will include complex combinations, level changes, poses, and floor work. Please bring a sword and knee pads.

visit http://www.zanzibarstudio.com/workshops/nichole.html for more info.

Andrea has a few swords left for sale for $50. If you've never danced with a sword before, it's a lot easier than you may think! And it is a lot of fun!

HAFLA! HAFLA! HAFLA! After Nichole’s workshop there will be a hafla at the studio. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Come on down for an evening of free live music and dancing. Everyone is welcome. Dress to dance!

Despite the horrendous flight (or lack thereof) into Chattanooga, Ali and I had a wonderful time with you all! The workshop attendees were spontaneous and hard working, the audiences were very kind, but most of all I appreciated the generosity and creativity of everyone associated with Dandasha.
Thank you for making it such a wonderful experience - I hope we can do it again soon...only with more time to spare!

I just wanted to drop a note a rave about Tobias!!! He is an abolutely amazing instructor, drummer, and just all around person. We thoroughly enjoyed having him visit for the weekend.

He taught two days of workshops - Zils both days and Drums both days. He was exceptionally organized, patient, and detail oriented regarding technique. He taught a composition for the zils and drums which he taught to each group. Only a few people took both drums and zils, but those of us (like me) who just took zils, hung out for the drum workshop to continue working on the composition with the drummers.

If you ever get the chance to have Tobias come and teach, or if he is teaching at a venue near you, I HIGHLY recommend attending! You won't regret it!

Tobias' workshop was absolutely fantastic. Tobias is an amazing drummer, an excellent teacher and a fabulous person. As an extreme beginner, I was a little intimidated to be taking a workshop from someone of Tobias' caliber. He made the whole event fun and exciting and I learned more in the two days of the workshop than I have in the last year of trying to figure out how to make my banging on a doumbek into something rythmic that can be danced to.

Thanks so much Tobias. And thanks to Cat, Andrea and Teletha for a weekend full of food, wine, fun, music and dance.
